Mix Crain Crain en Green Plasas (Kalalu and Molokhia Palava Sauce) - Sierra Leonean Recipe

We cook a lot of leafy green vegetables in Sierra Leone, with smoked fish, lots of fresh chili and palm oil. This palm oil is made from the fruit of the palm tree and is different from the palm kernel oil.  So, if you want to be a bit adventurous this weekend or even during the week, give this recipe a go, and let me know how you went.  The ingredients you will need are:

250gCrain-crain (molokhia), 100g Chopped Green (Kalalu), 1lb meat of your choice, (for this recipe I used pork shoulder butt steak), smoked fish,(I used king fish commonly called bonita back home), a pint of palm oil, 1 medium brown onion, 2 habanero chillies, 2 stock cubes, ogiri (fermented sesame seeds) and salt.

 Method

Cut meat to bite size pieces and steam with salt for 10 minutes.
Then add palm oil and ogiri and bring to the boil for about 5 to 7 minutes

Add smoked fished that has been washed and broken into pieces.  Cook for another 10 minutes

Add stock cubes

Then add crain-crain and green and let it simmer for 10 more minutes

Finally add crushed brown onions and habanero chillies and let it simmer for 20 minutes

Serve with steamed rice. Enjoy
